Maria was a devoted advocate for caring for others. Throughout her educational journey, she demonstrated strong leadership and an unwavering commitment to personal growth while supporting those around her. Maria believed education was not only a path to individual success, but a powerful way to elevate others. She actively encouraged her peers to grow through mentorship, meaningful connections, and a shared pursuit of excellence.
While building her own career, Maria also served as a professor in an Anesthesiologist Assistant program, dedicating her time to mentoring and guiding the next generation of healthcare professionals. She had a natural ability to uplift and inspire those around her, leaving a lasting legacy of leadership, compassion, and a belief that true success is measured by how we help others grow.

Maria’s journey of service and leadership began in the hallways of Wadsworth High. This scholarship is dedicated to the contagious spirit for life she carried—a rare combination of Determination to overcome personal or academic obstacles and Grace to remain kind and focused on others through it all. This award supports the next generation of Grizzlies as they pursue their own calling in healthcare or service-oriented fields.

Our Commitment
Dedicated to carrying forward the causes closest to her heart, The Maria Fortner Foundation will provide student scholarship support, it will also support individuals and families affected by cancer, and contribute to cancer-related research and patient advocacy organizations — the very places that embody the unity and compassion Maria cherished.
Through these awards and this foundation, we pray and hope her light continues to shine in operating rooms, classrooms, and hospital corridors for generations to come.
